Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism
Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is the Government's preferred and recommended training package for health and social care staff in England. It supports CQC-registered providers in meeting the statutory requirement to ensure staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
Developed with autistic people and people with a learning disability, Oliver McGowan training helps professionals build the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to provide safe, informed and person-centred care. Lived experience, inclusive communication and reasonable adjustments are central to the learning.
What Makes Oliver McGowan Training Different?
Oliver McGowan training is built around co-production and learning from lived experience. Autistic people and people with a learning disability have been involved in its development, trial, evaluation and delivery, giving professionals the opportunity to learn directly from people with lived experience.
The programme was trialled with more than 8,000 participants, with evidence from the trial and evaluation helping to inform the standards now set out in the Oliver McGowan Code of Practice.
Is Oliver McGowan Training Mandatory?
The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a legal requirement for CQC-registered providers in England to ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role. The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the Government's preferred and recommended package for supporting providers to meet this requirement.
The Oliver McGowan Code of Practice, which came into effect on 6 September 2025, sets out the standards that this training should meet.
Learning From Lived Experience
A defining feature of Oliver McGowan training is the meaningful involvement of autistic people and people with a learning disability in its development and delivery.
This co-produced approach gives professionals the opportunity to learn directly from lived experience and understand how communication, reasonable adjustments and everyday practice can affect the quality of care.
